One woman drinks only calorie-free soft drinks; the other chooses the sugary regular versions that pack some 150 calories a can. Yet it’s the first woman who’s more likely to become overweight in the long run, according to research in the eight years study, the more diet soda a person drank on a daily basis, the greater risk she had of becoming overweight. Even more startling, there was no link between drinking regular soft drinks and weight gain (although any nutrition expert would agree that too much soda is never a good drink). Why the gain? The artificial sweeteners in diet drinks actually increase food cravings for some people and diet-soda drinkers may think that they can afford to indulge elsewhere.
