The answer depends on your age, a recent study found. Two groups – One age 20-25, the other in their 40s – were asked to drive a car at 80 miles an hour without veering out of their lane. Neither group had any trouble during daytime. Then they tried at 2 AM – once after drinking a cup of strong coffee, again (a week or more later) after a cup of decaf, and third time after napping in the car for 30min. Decaf didn’t help either group, but regular coffee or a nap kept the younger drivers in line. For the group of 12 older drivers, however, only coffee worked – they drifted over the line just eight times after a nap. Why did snooze time help the 20-something but not the over-40’s? The younger drivers got more – and deeper – sleep during their half hour test. Therefore, the older you are, the less efficient napping is at increasing your alertness.
