Most athletic shoes are made of a combination of many different materials, some of which may shrink if they are washed by machine. The process can also damage the glue that holds the shoes together and cause them to disintegrate. Athletic shoes made of leather, canvas or other fabric can be rubbed gently with a damp cloth, using a weak solution of lukewarm soapy water, then allowed to dry naturally at room temperature. Once leather athletic shoes have dried, you can apply a shoe cream or polish.
