customizing-your-living-roomIt’s about time to make your home look and feel like your own. It’s time to customize! While it is easier to personalize the kid’s rooms or the master bedroom, it’s quite a challenge to pull into the same magic in more common spaces inside the house, like the living room. Right? Maybe, impossible? Well, here’s a guide to help you with the task.

  • Pick your colors: Colors express mood – sunny tropical hues lend a happy atmosphere, dramatic reds cast tinges of romance, and basic black and white combos gives a serious no-nonsense appeal. Inevitably, the colors you choose also reflect on the people, who live inside the house. Ask yourself, what kind of atmosphere do I want to create? What atmosphere best describes my family? Then, let the color follow suit. Just remember that whatever color you pick, it has to blend well with your furniture and other living room fixtures.
  • Rearrange Furniture According To Your Liking: Choose a piece of furniture that will stand as the focal point of your house. It is your deluxe sofa? The grand piano? That way, you can set the other pieces of furniture around it, and avoid the cluttered look. Make sure that the arrangement also allows free movement and easy traffic in the living room area.
  • Embellish With Small Furniture: It just can’t be about the big, overwhelming pieces of furniture. To inject the “me” factor to your living room, place a low sofa table or bench and tables with your fave magazines and journals on them. Don’t forget to add the other elements like plants, vases and beautiful baskets that suit the “live-in” look of the house. Positioning a mirror on the wall (remember that it has to reflect eye-catching objects or part of the house) adds depth and create space, especially if you have a small living room.
  • Coordinate Accents: This is easy, find out what you can add to your living room to make it look more livable. After changing paints and flooring’s, coordinate the accent yourself. This means creating throw pillows, curtains, slip covers and table runners that compliment the rooms’ main color. Don’t be afraid to experiment – be as creative as you can be by adding fringe, beads or tassels to your pillows or curtains. While this accent can be accomplished through hand sewing, you can also invest on the right tools like sewing machines for this creative undertaking.
